Don’t get stuck out in the cold this winter. Now that the warmer months are shortly going to be a thing of the past, there is no better time than now to ensure your furnace is safe, operational and as energy efficient as it can be. You don’t want to wait until the last second when it gets cold to turn on your furnace only to find it is not functional. When it comes to servicing your furnace, the wisest choice one can make is to call in an HVAC professional to come and inspect your furnace. We know the ins and outs of your system and will change the filter, inspect for leaks, clean the furnace and double check to ensure everything is operational while checking for unhealthy gas leaks. NY NJ AC Connection have prepared a few simple steps you can perform on your own to prepare your furnace for the upcoming cold season.
Change Furnace Filters
You are going to want fresh filters to start with this season. After the initial change you will want to change your furnace filters monthly to every three months. Every home is different and has unique traffic patterns and HVACR needs. If you plan to go longer between filter changes, still check your filter each month just to be sure it doesn’t need to be changed, you’ll be able to tell by how dirty it is.
Stock Up on Extra Furnace Filters Now
During the warmer months you are more likely to find great deals and sales on furnace materials because there is a low demand for them. When the colder months hit, prices tend to go up with the demand. Think ahead and stock up while you can.
Clearance & Framing Around Furnace
If you’ve been storing things on top of or around your furnace now is the time to remove them. You will want your furnace to be free and clear of any clutter to reduce your risk of a fire starting. Be sure to keep the air ducts and return vents free and clear of obstruction as well.
Gas Furnaces
If you have a gas furnace, now would be an opportune time to call your gas company and have the gas topped off in your furnace. Gas is more affordable during the warmer months when there is a low demand. You will save a few bucks doing this step sooner rather than later.
Hot Water Radiators
If you have a hot water radiator it’s time to bleed the valves before another season of heavy use. Carefully open the valves slightly and close them shut when you start to see water present.
Carbon Monoxide & Radon Detectors
If you already have these, check to ensure they are in good working order. If you don’t have these now is a great time to make that purchase. Each year in the United States alone, 20,000-30,000 people are sickened by accidental carbon monoxide poisoning and nearly 500 are killed. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless gas that is difficult to detect. Most people don’t even know what is happening and they die in their sleep. Protect your family this winter and make the small investment of purchasing Radon and Carbon Monoxide detectors.
