Different Components of an HVAC Furnace or Boiler Heating System in Lower Manhattan, NYC

Most people understand the basic functions of a home’s heating system. In short, a furnace burns fuel which can be either electricity or natural gas to create heat. The heat is then circulated throughout the home to make the inside more comfortable. However, there is much more to a home’s heating system than just that. NY NJ AC Connection will explain the four major components of a home heating system and why regular maintenance is important to ensure proper functions of this complex heating system.

Major Components of a Heating System

Thermostat – The first major component that everyone deals with almost everyday is the thermostat. The thermostat isn’t actually attached to the heating unit, furnace, or boiler directly, nor is it attached to the duct work. The thermostat is located within the home to provide control to the entire HVAC system. Thermostats not only provide control but they are often referred to as the brains of the HVAC system. The thermostat sends the signal to the furnace or air conditioner and activates them if the home needs to be cooler or warmer. When a heating system is serviced, the thermostat in inspected as well to ensure proper calibration of the thermostat.
Burner – It is the burner that actually creates the heat from inside the furnace. Natural gas is ignited where the heat is sealed within a combustion chamber. Here the air from outside is vented into the chamber and the heated air will then be circulated into the home. The burner can produce poisonous fumes, which is why they need to be properly encased inside the combustion chamber. When the burners are checked during servicing, the technician searches for any signs of leaks or damage.
Heat Exchanger – The heat exchanger’s job is to recover the heat within the home. The heat exchanger pulls the heat within the home as it begins to cool down and sends it into the burner to be reheated. By recycling the warm air inside your home, your heating system doesn’t have to work so hard. The heat exchanger plays a vital role in heating efficiency.
Blower – The blower’s job is to push the heated air into the air duct system, which feeds to each room of a home. Often the blower breaks down so that no heat flows properly into each room. The blower is inspected during a heat system service.
Air Ducts – The air duct is the veins of your entire HVAC system. It is the air ducts that send the warm or cold air throughout your home. When a HVAC technician is out to service your heating system, the duct work is checked for leaks to ensure proper efficiency and no waste.
